The University of Zadar is the newest university in Croazia, for its registration, but from an historical point of view it is the oldest university in the country and in the whole of Europe; in fact in 1396 the General Dominican Institute for higher education, named UNIVERSITAS IADERTINA was already operating in Zadar. On this basis, in 1956 the faculty of arts was founded in Zadar. The first sitting Academic Senate was on the 25th March 2003 and on this occasion the official statute was approved and for this reason that day is known as the day of the university. (Dadi Academicus).

The continues its work in two places , one is the old city university situated in a very attractive place in the historical centre of the city (postal address: Mihovila Pavlinovića, bb) and the other is the new city university, in some modernised army barracks (postal address: Dott. Franje Tuđmana, 24i).

The university of Zadar is completely integrated, and consist of 21 departments including: Archaeology, English Language and Literature, Philosophy, French Language and Literature, Geography Media Studies, IT, Classical Philology, Italian Language and Literature and Library studies.
