Palazzo Ateneo


The palace is located in front of the gardens of Piazza Umberto,a  typical 18th century palace, with its statue of King Umberto I which dates back to the early 19th century. The palace is a monumental building planned by Giovanni Castelli in 1867 and completed in 1887. It is the historically and even now the headquarters of many university faculties. Its Aula magna, has some 1924 paintings. In its rooms with frescos, it hosted for many years, the museum of archaeology of Bari, until 2002. following this the Province and the University agreed to move archaeological treasures of the province to the buildings of the convent of Santa Scolastica, while those of the State were moved to the operative nucleus of the Superintendent of Archaeology.
