The square Mercantile
This square is the political centre of the city. It has always been a place were ideas and opinions have been exchanged, since mediaeval times, as proved by the buildings of old families of Bari, which face onto the piazza, and by its old name piazza Maggiore. Without doubt the most important building is the “Palazzo del Sedile dei Nobili”, it was the headquarters of the local council for two centuries beginning from the 16th century. Numerous reconstructions over the years have spoilt the style of the building a little bit over the centuries, but the influence of 17th century Napoleonic architecture is still evident.
