The seaport of Bari

The seafront in Bari, is one of the most successful transformations of urban planning in the last century, it was inaugurated in 1927 during the Fascist period. Bari was a city which needed to be propelled towards the East and so it was necessary to give Bari a new look, using the sea as its strongest link between modernism and its sea faring past and commerce.
Also in its architectural search for style, Fascism blends modernism with tradition. The buildings which characterise “Lungomare Nazario Sauro,”, completed in the 1930s’ were works ordered by the powerful Minister of Public Works for Bari, Araldo di Crollalkanza. At the furthest point of the jetty San Nicola one can find the Circolo Canottieri Barion, built directly on to the sea in 1930 by the architect Saverio Dioguardi. The Kursaal Santalucia, cinema/theatre, is decorated with floral motives of a late Liberty style and was commissioned by the engineer Orazio Santalucia and completed between 1924 and 1927. Typical of a walled hamlet, it is a building of compact blocks situated on the sea front.
Immediately after this , on the corner after Piazza Diaz, and the “Albergo delle Nazioni” (1935) and the residential building INAIL ,designed by the architect Alberto Caza Bini, is the Palazzo della Provincia (1935), planned by the engineer Luigi Baffa, it has a clock tower and is host several other offices including the Pinacoteca Provinciale (Provincial Art gallery). Next to it is the Palazzo del Ministro dei Lavori Pubblici (the offices of the Minster for public works), designed by the architect Carlo Vannoni in 1934 where elements of rationalism are blended with classicism., as seen in its perfectly symmetric façade. Today it hosts one of the regional offices. It is followed by the Caserma del Comando della Quarta Zona Aerea Territoriale ( the territorial area barracks) (1935) designed by the architect Aldo Forciganò who is also responsible for the famous Palazzo Mincuzzi realised in Bari during the 20s’ in via Sparano and the Caribinieri Barracks (Bergia) in 1936.
